What is a Window Sash?

A window sash is the component responsible for holding the glazing (glass panels) in place within the window frame and allowing the window to open and close (if the window is moveable).

A window sash slides up and down when opened or closed, often seen in double-hung or casement windows. These components require regular maintenance to ensure optimal operation, as they can deteriorate over time. Inadequate upkeep may lead to the need for a complete window replacement.

How Do Window Sashes Work?

A window’s sash is the framing that supports the glass. While officially called “vertical double-hung box-framed sliding sash windows,” most people simply refer to them as “sash windows.”

For windows that open, you can glide the sashes up and down using weights and ropes. Depending on the window’s design, the sashes may include handles to assist with opening. Double-hung windows, which are excellent for airflow, air circulation, and ventilation, can be opened by sliding the top sash down or the bottom sash up.

Different Types of Window Sashes

Not all windows have the same window sashes. Depending on the style of window you have, the window sash or sashes are constructed differently.

Double-hung windows feature two operating sashes that slide up and down, making them very easy to use and clean. You can simply tilt the sashes in to ensure thorough cleaning of both sides.

On sliding windows, the sashes open and close horizontally. Sliding windows are essentially the same as double-hung windows, just oriented horizontally.
